Kick-off in Ponte Preta and Atletico Sorocaba’s Campeonato Paulista encounter at the Moisés Lucarelli stadium on Saturday was delayed due to a swarm of bees.

The stubborn insects seemed intent on colonising a crossbar at the Campinas stadium, but members of the city’s fire department and exterminators scuppered the plans of the football-mad bees.

A multi-faceted approach, utilising an improvised flamethrower, fire extinguishers, chemicals and a bin bag eventually led to the demise of the bees, as the game got the green light.

After the hilarious hold-up, hosts Ponte Preta went on to claim all three points, winning 2-1.
