Limerick 0-3 Drogheda United

Drogheda United claimed a vital SSE Airtricity League Premier Division away win as they eased to a 3-0 victory against Limerick at Thomond Park.

Drogheda pinched the lead in the 63rd minute courtesy of a bizarre goal when Mick Daly's attempt took a wicked deflection off colleague Gavan Holohan.

Damien Richardson's side added a second on 65 minutes as influential midfielder Holohan summoned a crisp finish to punish an under-strength Limerick defence.

Six minutes from time, Cathal Brady cut in from the right to bag a third for Drogheda, who recorded their second win in the Treaty City in five days.

Destroyed by Derry City on Monday, Limerick were keen to summon a response against an improving Drogheda outfit.

Richardson's arrival has helped Drogheda generate momentum, but this match was always likely to be tough.

Inevitably the central-midfield battle carried significance, so the early promptings of Drogheda's trio of Daly, Holohan, and Garreth Brady had Limerick worried.

Even though Drogheda were bright in the first quarter, they didn't manufacture a significant opportunity before Limerick came close to grabbing the lead in the 20th minute.

Rory Gaffney's smashing 40-yard left-footed volley went narrowly wide as Limerick sought to land a blow.

Drogheda custodian Micheal Schlingermann saved a 24th-minute effort from Limerick skipper Shane Duggan as Martin Russell's side improved.

The woodwork came to Limerick's rescue in the 33rd minute when a Cathal Brady attempt shaved the post following a Gary O'Neill pass.

A minute before the break, Lee Lynch just couldn't make the requisite connection with a Jack Doherty pass as the teams went in deadlocked at the interval.

Eager to take control, Drogheda commenced the second period brightly and two minutes after the restart Barry Ryan was forced to make a fine stop to deny the impressive Brady.

Then a Daly cross located O'Neill in the area, but the striker's subsequent header drifted inches wide as Drogheda continued to probe.

Drogheda hit the front on 63 minutes as Daly's shot deflected off Holohan and the ball found its way to the back of the Limerick net.

Holohan clipped a delightful goal in the 65th minute to decorate another excellent individual display as Drogheda were in full control.

Winger Brady dashed inside to embellish the success with six minutes remaining as Drogheda claimedall three points.
