Dundalk midfielder Daryl Horgan has been named the SSE Airtricity/Soccer Writers’ Association of Ireland player of the month for May.

The 21-year-old midfielder bagged four goals during May as Dundalk went into the mid-season break as league leaders.

Horgan said: “I’m delighted to pick up the award, it’s an honour,” said Horgan.

“We have been playing great lately. I’m delighted with how we bounced back after the Setanta Cup final defeat to Sligo Rovers.

“We were where we wanted to be going into the break, top of the league, and that is where we want to stay.”

Dundalk return to action with a trip to the Brandywell to take on Derry City on Friday night

It is the first time Horgan has won the monthly award and he beat off competition from team-mate Chris Shields who finished second, while St Patrick’s Athletic pair Conan Byrne and Christy Fagan were joint third.
