Respected soccer writer Dunne dies

Noel Dunne, former football correspondent of the Irish Independent and Evening Herald, has died aged 79.

Dunne passed away after a long illness.

He was football correspondent with the Evening Herald before moving to the same role with the Irish Independent in 1967.

FAI chief executive John Delaney has led tributes to the former President of the Soccer Writers' Association of Ireland.

Delaney said: "Noel was a great friend of my father and had soldiered in the football game for many years.

"I remember him being particularly pleased to see the Republic of Ireland playing at Euro 88 and Italia 90.

"Noel was a great football reporter and he will be sadly missed by the Irish football family. He was very highly regarded for his work and personality."
