Peamount United made history today by becoming the first ever Irish side to emerge from the UEFA Women’s Champions League qualifying phase.
Following an emphatic 5-1 victory over Pärnu of Estonia, the Dublin outfit now advance to the round of 32 knock-out phase where they will meet some of Europe’s biggest teams such as Arsenal, Lyon and Frankfurt.
Despite losing 1-0 to Rayo Vallecano in their opening game, courtesy of a 91st minute strike, Peamount bounced back in emphatic style with a 7-0 victory over Slovenian opposition, Krka, who hosted the four-team tournament.
The 5-1 victory ensured that Peamount United created history as the first Irish team to qualify for the Champions League proper courtesy of a best runner-up spot across the eight qualifying groups.
Rachel Jenkins put Peamount ahead in the 5th minute while Sara Lawlor stunned the Estonian opposition with two quick-fire goals in the 30th and 33rd minute.
Ivanova pulled a goal back for Pärnu in the 56th minute but Irish international striker Stephanie Roche killed off any hopes of a late comeback with two goals in the 80th and 92nd minute which also ensured the elusive runner-up spot with a superior goal difference.
