James Mooney was the hero for Longford Town, as his penalty booked their place in the last 16 of the FAI Ford Cup, but they were made to fight hard by a very spirited Celbridge Town side.

The non-league outfit put it up to their eircom League Premier Division opponents and on the balance of play were unlucky to be the losing side.

The visitors dominated the first half, and put the Town defence and in particular 'keeper Mick Dempsey under severe pressure.

Dempsey was called into action on numerous occasions. His best save of the half came in the 30th minute, when he somehow tipped over a Bryan Hyland shot that seemed destined for the back of the net.

The only goal of the game came in the 65th minute, Gay Freeman was upended in the box by Celbridge defender Mark Hudson. Mooney slotted home the resulting penalty.

Town played out the last ten minutes with ten men, after Daire Doyle was sent off for his second bookable offence.
