Derry City got back to winning ways in the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division with a deserved 2-0 win over a disappointing Drogheda United side at the Brandywell.

The Candystripes were always in control and took the lead through Michael Duffy on 21 minutes when he volleyed home Patrick McEleney's delightful cross.

Rory Patterson sealed the result in the 65th minute when he converted Patrick McEleney's cross from the left wing from close range.

Derry had a good chance to break the deadlock after just five minutes, but Michael Duffy dragged his shot wide of the target after Patrick McEleney’s clever ball had caught the United defence napping.

City did take the lead on 21 minutes as Patrick McEleney’s cross-field pass picked out Duffy and his sublime volley beat United netminder David Ryan.

Ryan came to his side’s rescue on 30 minutes when he denied Patterson after the City striker had broken clear of the Drogs defence after latching on to Barry McNamee’s pass.

Patterson went close to adding a second right at the start of the second half but after out-muscling Alan McNally, he dragged his right-footed shot just wide.

The visitors went close to levelling things, but Paul Crowley’s snap-shot from the edge of the box took a deflection on its way past Doherty’s right-hand post.

Peter Hutton’s men netted a second on 65 minutes when Patrick McEleney’s lung-bursting run down the left ended with an inch-perfect cross which found Patterson lurking just in front of goal. He made no mistake with his finish.

United nearly pulled one back on 80 minutes, but Declan O’Brien’s shot through a throng of players was straight at the grateful Doherty.
