Carl Walshe popped up with a vital winner in the second half as Drogheda ended their six-game losing streak with a hard-earned 1-0 win over Bohemians in their SSE Airtricity League Premier Division clash.

There were chances at both ends in the opening five minutes as Drogheda’s  Daire Doyle cleared off the line from Karl Moore, before the hosts were denied by the woodwork as Cathal Brady struck the post from a tight angle.

Bohs dominated for long spells, with their best chances falling to Jason Byrne, but the veteran striker diverted two headers wide of the target and the visitors paid the price when Walsh fired home from 18 yards in the 70th minute.

In a lively start Bohs almost had the ball in the net inside four minutes when Paddy Kavanagh nodded into the path of Karl Moore whose header was knocked off the line by Doyle.

Drogheda produced an instant response as Brady drove into the box and went round keeper Dean Delany, only to drive against the inside of the post from a tight angle.

Unfortunately, that entertaining opening wasn’t a sign of things to come in the first half as ‘scrappy’ summed up the exchanges for the next 40 minutes, punctuated by occasional flashes of brilliance from Kavanagh.

Drogheda looked a side desperately short of confidence and didn’t trouble Delany, while the home keeper Dave Ryan saved only once, superbly tipping over the bar from Anto Murphy.

The visitors had the first opportunity of the second period when Dave Mulcahy burst forward and teed up Karl Moore whose low shot was parried by Ryan.

Stephen Beattie then advanced from right-back and drove into the box, only to slice his shot badly wide.

Drogheda were being penned back in their own half and Jason Byrne had two headed chances in quick succession but failed to test Ryan.

The home side conjured a rare chance when Eric Foley got into a shooting position 25 yards out and forced Delany into a save low to his left.

But it was still against the run of play when Drogheda hit the front on 70 minutes. Bohs’ makeshift right-back Stephen Beattie made a rash pass across his own backline and the alert Walshe intercepted before driving forward and shooting low past Delany.
