Shamrock Rovers continue to strengthen their squad ahead of the new SSE Airtricity League season by signing former Republic of Ireland international Stephen McPhail.

McPhail who enjoyed long and successful spells with Leeds United and Cardiff City joins Rovers on a one-year deal from Sheffield Wednesday.

The 34-year-old midfielder’s contract with English Championship club comes to an end this month, allowing him to put pen to paper on a deal with the Hoops.

Rovers boss Trevor Croly hailed the arrival of such and experienced midfielder and said: "Stephen is a very good addition to our squad for the up-coming season. He is a quality player who has significant experience playing at a very high level.

"He will fit in well to the squad we have built for the new season and blends in well with the mix of youth, experience and talent we have put together.

"He is proven to have a strong, committed character and is very keen to come and do well here well at Shamrock Rovers."
