Derry City cruised to a 6-0 win that was as emphatic as the scoreline suggests at the UCD Bowl in the Airtricity Premier Division.

The Students were outclassed by a Derry side prompted by hat-trick hero Rory Patterson.

Derry striker Patterson scored after 9, 26, and 36 minutes.

Thomas Crawley inflicted a further blow with a 49th minute goal while UCD's David O'Connor was red carded on 65.

Substitute Michael Rafter clipped a fifth in the 72nd minute and Griffin a sixth on 86.

Derry dictated the opening period as UCD made a string of costly errors.

Declan Devine's team settled impressively and UCD were pegged back by the Candystripes .

The clock had just ticked into the ninth minute when UCD custodian Ger Barron failed to deal with a routine situation and Derry took advantage.

Patterson reacted sharply and took the ball away from Barron before rolling it into the empty net.

Stunned UCD were unable to cope with Derry's vibrant approach as Kevin Deery and Ruaidhri Higgins provided the midfield guile.

In attack Patterson was certainly in the groove and he netted a sweet second in the 26th minute.

On this occasion it was Hugh Douglas who Patterson outsmarted and the Candystripes were two up.

There were flickers of encouragement for UCD with Dave McMillan a threat, but Derry were dominant most of the time.

A third goal was pocketed on 36 when Patterson's crisp free rattled the UCD net.

The Students had a few opportunities in the lead up to the interval with McMillan flashing a couple of deliveries across goal, but Derry went in at the break in a commanding position.

UCD boss Martin Russell made three changes introducing Robbie Creevy, Dinny Corcoran, and Tomas Boyle, but Derry weren't troubled.

The visitors added to their tally in the 49th minute when Thomas Crawley slammed past Barron.

O'Connor was sent off for a second bookable offence when fouling Mark Griffin in the 65th minute.

Derry inevitably scored again as replacement Rafter chipped Barron.

Griffin decorated the facile success four minutes from time with an opportunistic finish.
