Bohemians cemented their mid-table position in the Airtricity League Premier Division following a well-deserved 4-0 victory over bitter rivals Shamrock Rovers at Dalymount Park on Friday evening.

After Peter McMahon had opened the scoring in the 11th minute, the winger doubled his tally within six minutes of the restart.

Stephen O’Donnell’s sending-off added to Rovers’ woes and a brace from substitute Karl Moore in the final ten minutes concluded a wonderful evening for the Gypsies.

After a promising opening, the league holders were left to rue a lapse in concentration in the as Graham Gartland dawdled fatally, allowing Dwayne Wilson to seize possession with his precise centre finding the on-rushing McMahon who sidefooted home superbly from sixteen yards.

The hosts maintained their dominance with Wilson giving Gartland a torrid evening and both David Mulcahy and Wilson could have extended their side’s lead as the half progressed.

Despite their inefficiencies, the visitors almost drew level in the 40th minute when after a foul on Gary McCabe, Dennehy curled a 25-yard free-kick onto the top of Andy McNulty’s crossbar before drifting to safety.

There were further encouraging signs for the Hoops as the half concluded with both McCabe and Dennehy going close to restoring parity in the final two minutes of an eventful half both on and off the field of play.

That confidence took a massive blow however within six minutes of the restart as defensive uncertainty between Oscar Jansson and Gartland allowed Buckley to set up McMahon for a simple finish from close range.

Their deficit on the scoreboard was soon mirrored in personnel as half-time substitute Stephen O’Donnell was adjudged to have committed a professional foul on Keith Ward and was duly dismissed by Rob Rogers in the 56th minute.

The contest inevitably meandered from that point on with the hosts happy to absorb sporadic bouts on pressure with Ken Oman testing McNulty’s reflexes and Gary Twigg hitting an upright.

However, Moore made it three in the 84th minute after fine work from substitute Dinny Corcoran and Jansson summed up a miserable night for the Hoops when fumbling a Moore shot three minutes from time.
