UCD and Galway United played out a dull scoreless draw in front of just 320 spectators at the Belfield Bowl.

Both goalkeepers dealt with any trouble that came their way, although with only three shots on the target they were little more than spectators.

The game needed a mistake or a piece of brilliance to settle it, but neither arrived as these sides are solid if not spectacular. A poor final ball was often to blame for ending any meaningful moves towards goal.

These sides had only scored seven goals between them this season, so it was no surprise to see them struggling in the final third.

It was a second successive scoreless draw for the Students, while Galway will at least be pleased with their first clean sheet of the season.

UCD named an unchanged side from the one that beat Bray Wanderers and drew with Shamrock Rovers on Friday.

Anto Flood, Paul Sinnott and Gary Curran came into the Galway side. However, Stephen O'Donnell replaced Curran after he picked up a knee injury in the first half.

It was a quiet opening period in which football only briefly threatened to break out.

Galway's Karl Sheppard wasted the only genuine opportunity of the half as the break approached. O'Donnell dispossessed Greg Bolger in midfield and fed the unmarked Sheppard, but he dragged his shot wide of the far post.

Ciaran Kilduff tested Barry Ryan after the restart with an overhead kick following a short corner involving Graham Rusk and Ciaran Nangle. Moments later, Ryan parried a near post strike by Rusk.

UCD looked the side most likely to opening the scoring as first Kilduff headed over when unmarked and then a Rusk cross just evaded the reach of Bolger.

O'Donnell tried his luck with three long-range shots but failed to worry Billy Brennan in the UCD goal.

Both sides used their substitutes to try to nick a winner and it was one of those replacements that nearly broke the deadlock late on.

James Creaney, who had replaced Derek O'Brien, volleyed goalwards but Brennan got down to push the ball to safety and earn his side a point.
