Drogheda United have added to their squad for the forthcoming season with the acquisition of former Bray Wanderers striker John Flood.
26-year-old Flood signed for the Boynesiders after featuring for Dundalk in the Jim Malone Cup where his brace secured victory for the Lilywhites.
He is delighted to secure a Premier Division club for the impending season and admits that Alan Mathews made his decision to sign for Drogheda a lot easier.
Flood said: ‘I received a phone call the next day from Alan (Mathews) to ask if I had signed for Dundalk and after talking to him for a while I agreed to sign for Drogheda.
‘I explained that I had no commitments to Dundalk, he seems like a great chap and made it very easy for me to sign.’
Flood has expressed an excitement regarding the start of the new season.
He said: ‘I am really looking forward to the new season, I can’t wait to start the season, it should be good.’
Before the Jim Malone Cup, Flood said that he didn’t realise he would feature in it, but without a club he viewed the game as a chance to play for a contract.
He said: ‘I only found out a few days before the game that I was playing, at that point I hadn’t made any commitments to Dundalk.
‘I saw this as my chance to play for a contract and to hopefully get myself a club for the next season.
‘I haven’t trained with the side yet, but I’m looking forward to getting stuck in and doing my best over the coming season.
‘I had a few offers from First Division clubs but I want to play in the Premier Division and I’m going to do my best with Drogheda.’
