Sean Francis has resigned as assistant manager of eircom League of Ireland First Division side Waterford United.

Francis offered his resignation following last night's game against Athlone Town due to the current financial situation at the club and to minimise the effect on the players.

Francis joined the club with manager Gareth Cronin and Cronin paid tribute to the work done by Francis in his time at the RSC.

Cronin said: 'Sean was a tremendous asset to Waterford United and his record as a player and as a member of the management team is superb.'

'He was hugely disappointed with the turn out in recent weeks following the club's appeal for support and his offer is typical of the man. He has always put the players before himself and this is no different.'
