Two goals in four minutes earned Cork City a comfortable Setanta Sports Cup victory against Cliftonville at Turner’s Cross.

Cliftonville went into the game in the knowledge that they had already qualified for next years Setanta Sports Cup and European football as a result of their third place finish in this season’s Irish Premier League.

In this competition, the visitors were unlucky to lose 3-2 to Drogheda United, before their scoreless draw with Dungannon.

FAI cup holders Cork City had won 2-0 against Dungannon and played out a scoreless draw with the Drogs.

The home side made one change from the team that won in Galway on Friday night, with Dave Mulcahy coming in to the back four for skipper Dan Murray. Midfielder Joe wore the captain’s armband.

The first ever meeting between the clubs saw the home side dominate the first half without being able to break the deadlock.
Dave Mooney went closest for City when heading a cross from Neale Fenn inches wide.

But John O’Flynn opened the scoring for the Leesiders on 71 minutes.

Dave Mooney’s pass unlocked the Cliftonville defence and set the striker free. His initial effort was saved by John Connolly but the Cork star made amends from the rebound.

A Mooney header from a George O'Callaghan floated cross from the left on 75 minutes wrapped up the win and three valuable points.
