Bottom side Longford Town closed the gap on Waterford United to two points with a hard-fought but well-deserved 1-0 win over UCD at Belfield.

Dessie Baker was the Longford hero when he got the all-important goal in the 12th minute.

Town knew that three points were required if they had any chance of avoiding relegation and they started the game brightly. Robbie Martin tested the UCD defence as early as the 5th minute.

In the 12th minute, the deadlock was broken as Baker sublimely chipped Darren Quigley from the edge of the box.

Dave Mooney had a glorious chance to double the advantage in the 28th minute but he dragged his shot wide inches wide.

UCD’s only chance of the half came in the 32nd minute but Conor Sammon was denied by Shay Kelly in the Longford goal.

The second half was a battle as the Students tried to get back into the game but the Longford defence stood firm and they held out for the win.
