A scintillating second half display by Shelbourne saw them brush aside the challenge of Kilkenny City who had given as good as they got in a first half that saw the teams share two goals.

Ted O'Connor opened the scoring for the Cats in the 32nd minute but just three minutes later Anthony Flood got the first goal of a brilliant hat-trick.

There was only one team in it in the second half and goals by Stuart Malcolm, Flood (2) and James Chambers from a penalty ten minutes from time eased Shels to three deserved points.

Kilkenny's second half sub John MacNicholas grabbed a consolation for the losers.

The game was marred by a hand injury to Kilkenny's Michael Comerford and a facial injury to Willie Tyrrell that required stitching.
