Clare Shine secured a memorable victory as the Republic of Ireland beat Spain 1-0 on their UEFA Women’s U19 Championship debut in Oslo.

Ireland had plenty of the play and persistence paid off as they took the lead on 54 minutes when Sarah Rowe’s cross was hooked clear to Shine who controlled the ball before converting with a stinging shot.

Dave Connell’s side showed excellent composure in the final stages to record a historic victory that sets them up for Friday’s Group B showdown with England before a final game against Sweden.

REPUBLIC OF IRELAND: Dunne; Wright, O’Connell, McCarthy, Mustaki; O’Connor, Dwyer, Connolly; McCabe, Shine (Carson 89), Rowe.
