Republic of Ireland Women’s National Team Manager Sue Ronan has called up Peamount United striker Stephanie Roche for next Wednesday’s FIFA World Cup qualifier away to Slovenia in Velenje, kick-off 4pm (Irish time).

Roche replaces her Peamount United strike partner Sara Lawlor, who has had to withdraw from the squad because of a knee injury.

The call-up completes an amazing week for Roche who has become a household name after a video clip of the wonder goal she scored against Wexford Youths Women AFC in the Bus Éireann National League on 13 October went viral on the internet.

The spectacular goal has already attracted in excess of 1.8 million hits on Youtube.

Having finally broken her duck for the season with that goal, the floodgates have opened for Roche who, after scoring two against Wexford, followed that up with another brace last Sunday against Galway’s Women’s FC to become the first player to score 50 goals in the League.

Roche, who has scored three goals in 24 appearances for Ireland, last played in the Cyprus Cup back in March when she was a second half substitute in the 0-1 defeat by Finland, the only loss suffered by the national team in 2013.
