The Republic of Ireland U21 team return to action in the UEFA U21 Championships qualifiers tomorrow when they meet Romania in Piatra Neamt.

U21 caretaker manager Harry McCue had to make two changes to the squad he named for the two qualifying round Group Six fixtures against Romania.

Jack Grealish (on-loan to Notts County from Aston Villa) suffered an ankle injury, while Michael Harriman (on-loan to Gillingham from QPR) has a calf injury.

Both incidents occurred on club duty. Bradford’s Carl McHugh and Preston’s Will Hayhurst have been drafted in.

Samir Carruthers (on-loan to MK Dons from Aston Villa) is suspended for the first game after being sent-off for two yellow cards against Germany last month but he will be available for Tuesday’s meeting with the Romanians in Sligo.

“We had a very long journey to get to Romania but after a couple of days everybody has settled in,” said McCue, who is deputising for Noel King who takes the interim manager’s position with the senior squad.

“We’ve had a couple of chats with the lads and the feeling amongst them all was that we hadn’t performed in the Germany game and they want to put things right. We know we’re a better team than we showed in that game.

“Romania are on one point and we’re on three points and we definitely want that gap to be still there for the second game in Sligo on Tuesday afternoon.

“The Romanians have brought in a lot of new players and changed their squad so I’m sure they’ll be fired up to get a result tomorrow. We’re expecting a tough test.”
