The Republic of Ireland U19 side began their UEFA Championships qualifying campaign with a 2-0 victory over Azerbaijan in Angelholms, Sweden, today.

Paul Doolin’s side grabbed a first-half opener through Aberdeen striker Alan O’Sullivan before Liverpool winger Alex O’Hanlon wrapped things up late on against the Azeris, who had a man sent off in the first half.

"We played well. I felt it would be a tricky game as they've so much preparation behind them but all in all it was a great start,” said Doolin.

“Azerbaijan were decent and both sides had early chances. They were an aggressive team with good players and pace but I felt their discipline may cost them and they had a man sent-off. We played well and we kept a clean sheet, which is positive."
