Victor Valdes has bid farewell to Barcelona with an open letter to the club's fans.

The 32-year-old goalkeeper, who had long planned to leave his only professional club this summer at the end of his contract, has been sidelined through the final part of the season after suffering a serious knee injury in March.

"The time has come to say goodbye to you all," Valdes wrote in his letter.

"Unfortunately, I could not end my time here playing football as I would have liked, but that's life sometimes and this year has been cruel to me in this regard."

Valdes went on to thank almost all of the coaches he has worked with by name, with the notable exception of incumbent Gerardo Martino.

Valdes joined Barca from Tenerife as a teenager, and spent 12 seasons in the first-team squad, going on to win six La Liga titles, three Champions League crowns, two Copa del Reys, two European Super Cups and the Club World Cup twice.

He is continuing to rehab the knee injury which will keep him out of the World Cup, but is widely expected to join Monaco in the coming weeks.
