Clarence Seedorf has been brought into the Netherlandssquad for the friendly international against England in Amsterdam on Wednesday.
AC Milan star Seedorf replaces Ajax's Wesley Sneijder, who picked up a knee injury in his side's 1-0 defeat to PSV Eindhoven on Sunday.
Seedorf's inclusion marks the first time he has been called up to the squad under coach Marco van Basten, who last week was at pains to point out that the midfielder still has a future role to play despite slipping down the international pecking order.
'He must compete with Rafael van der Vaart and Wesley Sneijder, said Van Basten of Seedorf after announcing his squad.
'For the time being, those last two have my preference.
'I will not say that Seedorf will never get a chance with me as coach,' he continued. 'But the fact is that I prefer other players for now.'
With Sneijder now sidelined, Seedorf will be hoping to cement his place in future squads if given the chance to shine against England in the Amsterdam ArenA.
