German match-fixing scandal deepens

Duisburg goalkeeper Georg Koch added another development to Germany's match-fixing scandal revealing he was offered a 20,000 euro purse to throw a game last season.

On the final day of last season second division Energie Cottbus, who Koch was playing for at the time, took on Regensburg and Koch received a phone call asking him to let a few goals in.

“A man called Steffen Karl contacted me before the Regensburg game,” Koch said.  “He offered me 20,000 euros to let Regensburg score two or three goals.”

After Koch hung up Karl phoned back two hours later threatening him if he revealed what had happened.  A Steffen Karl used to play for Hertha Berlin and Borussia Dortmund and media reports indicate this is the person being looked at.

Referee Robert Hoyzer, who admitted manipulating four matches, had apparently already named Karl and he is currently being investigated in connection with the scandal.
