The Spanish FA could punish Atletico Madrid after racist chanting marred their derby defeat to city-rivals Real tonight.

Real's full-back Roberto Carlos came in for particular abuse, especially in the second half, with the home fans continually taunting the Brazil defender.

The chanting became so bad at one point that referee Alfonso Perez Burrull went over to the touchline to talk to the fourth official.

A message was then passed on to club officials, who put out a request over the loudspeaker asking for the abuse to stop.

Unfortunately, the Atletico fans chose to ignore the request and the chants continued.

Real won the game 3-0 thanks to two goals from Ronaldo and another from Santiago Solari.

The racism shown at the Vicente Calderon stadium is the latest in a number of high-profile incidents which have tarnished the image of Spanish football.

The issue initially came under the spotlight following the abuse dished out to Shaun Wright-Phillips and Ashley Cole at the friendly between Spain and England at Real Madrid's Bernabeu stadium in November.
