The Republic of Ireland could have the fourth largest contingent of fans at this summer's European Championships in Poland and Ukraine, according to the Football Association of Ireland.

FAI chief executive John Delaney was informed by UEFA that Ireland was in the top four, which he said was remarkable given the economic situation.

He was speaking at a press conference at the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport, during which details of a new National Sports Campus at Abbotstown were announced.

Minister Leo Varadkar pointed out that if the team qualify for the second round of the tournament in Ukraine, Ireland has an up to date air service agreement with that country.

He said any airline that said it couldn't put on extra flights would not be telling the truth.
