Reports in England suggest Arsenal captain Thomas Vermaelen has agreed to join Manchester United.

The Daily Telegraph reports that the Belgian defender has agreed terms with the Red Devils of around £100,000 per week and is waiting for the clubs to agree a price, expected to be around £10m.

Vermaelen (28) has just one year remaining on his contract and has struggled to break into the Arsenal side of late.

Incoming Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal has made strengthening his defence a priority after a season in which Rio Ferdinand, Chris Smalling, Phil Jones and Jonny Evans were criticised for their performances.

Vermaelen made a strong start to his Arsenal career after signing for the Gunners in 2009 and became club captain but in recent times has been kept out of the team by first-choice centre-back pair  Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny .
