Mick McCarthy is reported to be in advanced talks with Ipswich Town regarding the vacant manager’s job at the club.

The Suffolk club are without a boss since the sacking of Paul Jewell last week and are currently bottom of the Championship.

McCarthy has been out work since parting company with Wolves last February. If the does take over at Portman Road, he will be given funds to strengthen the squad.

There had been initial reports that McCarthy would be joined by former Ireland international Matt Holland at Portman Road.

However that speculation appears to have died and there are no indications that Holland will not be returning to the club he served as a player.
