Independent News and Media have agreed to make a payment to the Hillsborough Family Support Group after Liverpool footballer Jamie Carragher threatened to sue the publication for libel over a piece they published in their sports section last month.

The article, which was about the move by Fernando Torres from Liverpool to Chelsea, was written by journalist Dion Fanning.

In an apology in the Sunday Independent last weekend, the paper said they 'regretted' a number of references made in the article about Jamie Carragher which they now accept were 'inappropriate'.

They said that at the request of Mr Carragher they had made a donation to the Hillsborough Family Support Group.

It's understood the amount paid was in the region of £5,000 and that the paper also paid £1,000 to cover Mr Carragher's legal costs.

Independent News and Media say they have no further comment to make on the issue.
