Ireland defender Marc Wilson sustained a serious-looking injury in a challenge with striker Steven Fletcher in Stoke’s 0-0 draw with Sunderland at the Britannia Stadium.

It appeared to be an innocuous challenge but Wilson looked in a lot of discomfort as the Stoke medical team attended to the full-back.

Wilson had to be carried off on a stretcher and was taken to hospital immediately.

Stoke boss Tony Pulis gave an update on Wilson after the game. Pulis said: "He has gone to hospital straight away, so we are just waiting for confirmation of what it is. We are not sure.

"We’re just waiting for the outcome of the hospital check." - Pulis

“We’ve sent him for an X-ray as a precaution because Marc heard something when he went down, but a break is the worst case scenario.

“It’s too early to say what the problem is. We’re just waiting for the outcome of the hospital check.

"I think he actually did it himself. I think his studs got caught in the ground."
