Everton have lodged an appeal with the Football Association over midfielder Tim Cahill's red card against Liverpool on Saturday.

The Australia international was dismissed in the 80th minute of the 2-0 Merseyside derby defeat at Goodison Park for his lunging tackle on Xabi Alonso.

Referee Mike Riley showed Cahill a straight red card, a fact which allows the Toffees to appeal.

According to the club, a hearing will take place later this week at which they are allowed to submit written documentation.

Cahill is facing a three-match ban, starting this weekend against Newcastle, if his appeal is unsuccessful.

Meanwhile, manager David Moyes has admitted a Football Association charge of improper conduct.

The charge related to Moyes' reaction to a decision made by referee Alan Wiley during the Toffees' Premier League match against Stoke City on 14 September.

Moyes has requested a personal hearing, but no date has been set for this at present.

The Scot was angered by Wiley's decision not to award a penalty for what he felt was a handball by Stoke defender Leon Cort.
