Blackburn Rovers 3-0 Birmingham City

David Bentley enhanced his international credentials with a brilliant 66th-minute strike to help steer Blackburn into the Carling Cup fourth round.
The 23-year-old, widely jeered when he made his senior international debut against Israel earlier this month, produced a delightful effort from 25 yards which flew into the top corner.
Matt Derbyshire added the second from the penalty spot and substitute Roque Santa Cruz netted a last-minute header to finally end the spirited resistance of what was effectively Birmingham's reserve side.
That only 9,205 were present at Ewood Park to witness the victory was the only disappointment for Mark Hughes as he plots his side's route to Wembley.
Alongside Birmingham boss Steve Bruce, Hughes won the competition as a Manchester United player in 1992 and helped Blackburn beat Tottenham in the 2002 final.
Bruce made it clear where his priorities lie this term with the team he sent out at Ewood Park.
He made 11 changes to the side which claimed a creditable goalless draw at Liverpool four days earlier, bringing in virtual unknowns such as Ghana goalkeeper Richard Kingson - who suffered a sickening facial injury which led to him being stretchered off shortly before half-time and taken to hospital.
Hughes made just five changes to his starting line-up and Blackburn wasted little time in trying to make their superior experience pay.
That it was Bentley who emerged as the key protagonist came as no surprise to anyone.
In the second minute the winger whipped a delightful curling free-kick into the outside of the side-netting from 20 yards before delivering a pinpoint corner onto the head of Derbyshire moments later.
The England Under-21 striker made decent contact but his effort was blocked and Birmingham breathed again.
There was precious little respite for the visitors in the opening exchanges and in the seventh minute Derbyshire's vicious cross from the right found Jason Roberts on the edge of the six-yard box.
The former Wigan man was desperately slow to react but the ball sliced off him and towards Kingson's goal and the Ghanaian produced a fine reflex save to avert the danger.
Yet Blackburn continued to build momentum and another Bentley cross from the right again found Derbyshire lurking in the six-yard box.
He connected and looked to have done enough to beat Kingson, but Stuart Parnaby showed outstanding alertness to nod the ball off the line to prevent a certain goal.
The ball was driven straight back into the heart of the visitors' penalty area but somehow Roberts failed to make a vital connection with the goal at his mercy.
David Dunn, who rejoined his hometown club in January after three-and-a-half injury-plagued years at Birmingham, then showed his old boss Bruce what he really is capable of.
Some nimble footwork allowed Dunn to engineer the space for a shooting chance 20 yards from goal in the 25th minute, but Kingson did well to beat his low effort away.
Roberts then miskicked just six yards from goal, before Brad Friedel tipped a Mikael Forssell effort around the post for a corner.
Five minutes before the break, Kingson had his face smashed into a post after contesting a Bentley free-kick with Chris Samba.
The goalkeeper gingerly got to his feet after treatment but then dramatically collapsed again as it became obvious he was not fit to continue.
The seriousness of the blow led to five minutes of treatment and he was eventually taken off on a stretcher and replaced by Colin Doyle.
Six minutes after the break Dunn slipped Roberts clear and the striker capitalised on Radhi Jaidi's slip to race through on goal.
He had only Doyle to beat but fired wide before collapsing in a heap, apparently injured, before being replaced by Santa Cruz.
In the 66th minute the breakthrough came when Bentley glided effortlessly past Damien Johnson and struck a brilliant diagonal right-foot shot from 25 yards past Doyle and into the top corner.
Derbyshire claimed the second from the spot with 10 minutes remaining when substitute Rafael Schmitz fouled him and Santa Cruz applied the coup de grace with a late header from Brett Emerton's cross.
