Shamrock Rovers defeated Cork City 2-0 in their EA Sports Cup quarter-final at Tallaght Stadium tonight.
The first half was marred by two sendings off. Firstly, Cork’s Garry Buckley was given a straight red for an apparent head butt on Ronan Finn, while Gary McCabe evened up the numbers moments later with a second yellow.
Rovers then took the lead on 42 minutes courtesy of Finn. Finn met a cross with a volley, which rebounded back off the post, and the Dubliner was quickest to react to finish calmly.
Cork City threatened in the second half, with John O’Flynn going close twice in the space of a minute and Liam Kearney later on, but Rovers sealed the victory in injury time through Ciaran Kilduff.
Rovers will meet Bohemians in the semi-finals.
