Brazil 2-1 Republic of Ireland

Facing the mighty Brazil was always likely to be a tough opener to the Republic of Ireland Women's Under-17 World Cup campaign in Trinidad and Tobago, and so it proved.

Battling the stifling heat at the Larry Gomes Stadium in Arima, Ireland got off to the worst possible start, going a goal down after just four minutes.

Brazil striker Glaucia slipped free in the six yard box and finished neatly passed Irish goalkeeper Grace Moloney in just the fourth minute.

Brazil continued their early pressure as Ireland struggled to get out of their half and Campbell made a fine reflex save after a drive from Brazil defender Ingrid.

The Girls in Green managed the odd counter-attack. Siobhan Killeen went close with a shot from outside the box, while Megan Campbell's long throw caused the Brazilians problems.

However, the South Americans a constant threat and their quick passing presented a glorious chance for Luana. Moloney again came to the rescue for Ireland with an outstanding one handed save to keep the deficit to a single goal.

It took Ireland a while to settle after the loss of the early goal- but they eventually found their rhythm, with particular joy coming down the left hand side.

On the half hour, Killeen's mazy run was abruptly ended. From the free kick Campbell swung in a delightful ball that was begging to be headed home, but nobody could apply the finishing touch so it stayed 1-0 to Brazil at the break.

Ireland came out on the front foot after the restart and they drew level on 58 minutes.

Magnificent vision from Aileen Gilroy picked out Siobhan Killeen in space on the left and she smashed the ball past the Brazilian keeper to send the small but noisy band of Irish supporters into raptures.

However the lead didn't last long and a neat piece of skill from danger-woman Glaucia restored Brazil's lead as she turned in the box and angled a looping shot past the reach of Moloney.

The game began to open up and in the 68th minute Ireland captain Dora Gorman burst through in the box and fed Stacie Donnelly, but she was unable to get her shot away in time and the move broke down.

Despite calls of 'come on you Girls in Green' bellowing out from the stands, Ireland didn't get another chance as Brazil closed out the game.
