Larne suspend Lagan in light of Irish Cup violence

Larne midfielder Anthony Lagan has been suspended by the club for his involvement in the violent scenes in the Irish Cup game at Newry City.

Larne FC released an official statement saying: 'Following a club investigation and the referee's report Larne have decided to suspend Anthony Lagan with immediate effect.

'It is our hope that Newry City will take similar action against those players named in the referee's report.'

Anthony Lagan is currently leading a poll on the Larne FC website which names him as the club's Player of the Month for December. He holds 33% of the vote.

The IFA has launched an investigation into the trouble which marred the Irish Cup game at Newry City.

Referee Raymond Crangle abandoned the match after a mass brawl broke out between up to 30 players and members of the coaching staff.

IFA president Raymond Kennedy has already stated that both clubs could be kicked out of the competition following the mass brawl.

The Newry dugout was one of the flashpoints of the incident; however, there were also incidents of aggression across the pitch. The violence commenced after two Larne players and Larne manager Paul Millar had been sent-off.

The score in the match was poised at 2-1 before the violence erupted, leaving Crangle and his assistants no choice but to abandon the match after 82 minutes.

The PSNI has also confirmed that it is studying footage of Saturday's incidents.
