Rovers sign Drogheda's Chambers
Thursday, 26 November 2009 13:50Shamrock Rovers have already started to strengthen their squad in advance of the new season by signing former Drogheda United and Shelbourne midfielder, James Chambers.
'I believe James is one of the most promising young players in the league,' says Hoops' boss, Michael O'Neill. 'He has a great desire to improve and as he showed last season with Drogheda, he is a goal threat from midfield and a dead ball specialist.
'We are delighted to have him at the club and look forward to working with him,' O'Neill adds.
The Tallaght club also confirmed that they have released Simon Madden, Darragh Maguire, Shane Robinson and Cory Tracey.
'Simon and Cory are both young lads who had limited opportunities in the first team, and at this stage of their careers they need regular first team football,' says O'Neill.
'I would also thank Darragh Maguire and Shane Robinson for their contribution to Shamrock Rovers throughout the 2009 season,' he added. 'They are top-class professionals."
The remaining players at Rovers who are not under contract have either agreed or are in negotiations on new contracts, although the future of both Ross Chisholm and Barry Murphy remains uncertain.
'Both parties are keeping their options open,' is how O'Neill described the situation with Chisholm, the 21-year-old Scottish midfielder who moved to Tallaght last July.
As for goalkeeper Murphy, O'Neill says: 'Barry has yet to notify us of his intentions for next season despite numerous attempts by the club to determine what he intends to do.
'He was offered an improved, two-year contract in July which is in line with the club's wage structure for senior players. However, he refused to commit himself to the club.
'I can only assume he is pursuing other options elsewhere,' added the Hoops' boss.
