Tuesday's Champions League round-up

Fiorentina booked their place in the last 16 of the Champions League with a narrow 1-0 win over Lyon in Group E which also sent Liverpool out of the competition.

A Juan Vargas penalty in the 28th minute was enough to see the Viola successfully navigate their way through the group stages for the first time in their history, joining opponents Lyon in the knockout phase and condemning the Reds to the Europa League.

A sell-out crowd of over 35,000 witnessed Fiorentina's historic achievement as they also became the first Italian representatives to qualify for the knockout round this year.

Elsewhere, a calamitous Ivica Dragutinovic own goal inflicted Sevilla's first defeat in the Champions League this season as Unirea Urziceni remained on course for a place in the next round following their 1-0 victory.

Visitors Sevilla twice struck the woodwork in the opening 20 minutes, with striker Freddie Kanoute hitting the post from six yards and Alvaro Negredo heading against the bar, before Dragutinovic's misplaced header handed Unirea a half-time lead.

Dacian Varga had three good opportunities to extend that advantage in the second period, but the second-placed Romanians had to be content with the solitary goal.

They meet Stuttgart - 2-0 winners over Rangers tonight - in the final group game next month as they bid to join Sevilla in the knockout stages.

Already-qualified Sevilla were urged to go for three points in order to make sure of top spot in Group G by club president Jose Maria del Nido, having booked their place in the last 16 with a 1-1 home draw against Stuttgart three weeks ago.

Russian champions Rubin Kazan continued their unlikely unbeaten streak in the Champions League with a gritty 0-0 draw against Dynamo Kiev in Group F.

After taking four points from their two matches with Barcelona, the hard-working hosts stretched their run to four matches and kept alive their hopes of progressing from a group in which they were expected to be outclassed.

Neither side were able to break the deadlock but the game was not short of excitement, with deadlock only ensured by the excellence of goalkeepers Sergei Ryzhikov and Olexandr Shovkovskiy.

Meanwhile, AZ Alkmaar slipped meekly out of the Champions League as visitors Olympiacos moved to the brink of qualification following this scoreless draw.

Ronald Koeman's side needed a win to keep alive any hope of progressing from Group H after taking just two points from their opening four games.

But they were unable to find a way past visiting keeper Antonis Nikopolidis as Olympiacos moved three points clear of third-placed Standard Liege with one game remaining.
