Bohemians are unofficial champions

watch

Bohemians have unofficially retained their League of Ireland Premier Division crown after a 3-1 win over Sligo Rovers.

Bohemians go into the final round of games next weekend with a three-point advantage over second-placed Shamrock Rovers, who were held 1-1 by Galway United.

So even though it's still mathematically possible that Shamrock Rovers can overtake Bohemians, the latter side are effectively champions as they have a +16 goal difference over Shamrock Rovers.

Bohemians led by 3-0 at half-time against Sligo, with goals from Paddy Madden, Joseph Ndo and Jason Byrne inside the first half-hour.

Dean Marshall responded for Sligo just after half-time, but Bohs saw the game out with ease to effectively ensure the retention of their Premier League crown.

Speaking afterwards, Bohemians manager Pat Fenlon said: 'It's a fantastic result for us. Obviously it's not mathematically done yet but it's gonna take a minor miracle.

'I can only speak so highly of the players; it's all about them. To do it [win the title] two years in a row is very, very difficult. It's a fantastic achievement.

'I have to pay credit to the whole staff [at the club]. But you always get what you deserve in football.'
