Candystripes cancel Celtic friendly

Derry City have cancelled Sunday afternoon's friendly encounter with Celtic at the Brandywell.

The match had been agreed as part of Pat McCourt's transfer to the Glasgow giants.

It's believed the reason for the eleventh-hour cancellation was down to the quality of the travelling Celtic squad, and a Derry spokesman insisted that the only recognisable player was reserve team defender Danny Lafferty, who is from the Derry area.

Confirmation of the cancellation was made during the Premier Division clash with league leaders Shamrock Rovers.

Irish League club Cliftonville, who are due to host Celtic on Tuesday night in a televised match, have sold in the region of 2,500 tickets for their match against the Bhoys.
