19:06pm Richard Dunne's move to Villa is expected to go through although the Premier League have confirmed they will not be able to ratify the transfer until tomorrow.

18:00pm Harry Redknapp has confirmed that Jamie O'Hara has gone on loan to Portsmouth, with Kranjcar moving to Spurs on a permanent deal.

18:00pm Burnley have signed Portsmouth striker David Nugent on a six-month loan deal, subject to clearance. The former Preston player has endured a difficult time at Fratton Park since his £6million move in July 2007.

17:50pm: Birmingham City have signed Sunderland midfielder Teemu Tainio on loan until the end of the season. The 29-year-old Finnish international, who has been capped 46 times by his country, joined the Black Cats from Tottenham in July 2008.

17:12pm: Reports that Richard Dunne has joined Aston Villa are coming through. The clubs agreed a fee and Dunne has passed a medical and agreed personal terms earlier in the day, however Dunne's pay-off from City is believed to be behind the hold-up.

17:06pm: Kranjcar's move from Portsmouth to Tottenham has gone through in time following a successful medical and the agreeing of personal terms.

Meanwhile, Portsmouth have confirmed the signing of defender Mike Williamson from Watford on a four-year deal.

17:02pm: Niko Kranjcar's move to Tottenham also remains unconfirmed but is believed to have gone through in time.

17:00pm: And the transfer window is closed. Still no word as to whether Richard Dunne's move has gone through yet - this one could drag on.

16:58pm: Dublin's Ciaran Whelan has announced his retirement from intercounty football - is it too late for Manchester City to swoop?

16:57pm: The mooted Anton Ferdinand and Alan Hutton swap deal between Tottenham and Sunderland appears is dead in the water.

16:54pm: Unconfirmed yet, but Richard Dunne deal appears to be going through.

16:47pm: Celtic are to sign Chinese captain Zheng Zhi, the deal might not go through today but as the player is a free agent the move is not affected by the transfer window.

16:46pm: The Richard Dunne saga looks to go right to the wire. Dunne is holding out for a pay-off from Manchester City as he has four years left on his current contract and is due a testimonial next year.

16:45pm: Nicky Shorey's proposed loan move from Aston Villa to Portsmouth is off after the player was unable to agree a deal with Pompey.

16:44pm: Eduardo has been handed a two-match ban for his dive against Celtic. Good to see, but how has Cristiano Ronaldo escaped a similar ban all these years?

16:42pm: Hull have confirmed the signing of defender Ibrahima Sonko on a season-long loan from Stoke.

The 28-year-old Senegal international made 14 appearances for Stoke last season but was unlikely to feature this term with the Potters having strengthened their defensive ranks with Robert Huth and Danny Collins.

16:39pm: An interesting one here, according to reports Sunderland and Tottenham are locked in talks over a swap deal which would involve Anton Ferdinand going to Spurs and Alan Hutton going the other way.

16:36pm David Bentley, who has been linked to Manchester City and Liverpool today, looks like he's going to have to settle in for a long spell on the Tottenham bench.

16:32pm: Meanwhile, Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez has been charged with improper conduct for criticising the referee following his side's defeat at Tottenham Hotspur last month.

Liverpool were beaten 2-1 on the opening day fixture at White Hart Lane but Benitez was annoyed that his side had not been awarded a penalty when Spurs defender Benoit Assou-Ekotto tangled with Andriy Voronin late on.

16:30pm Thirty minutes to go and still no word of Richard Dunne signing for Villa.

16:21pm: Well even Sky Sports News appear to have given up totally and are now covering rugby and horse racing. Oh the shame.

16:16pm: Bolton Wanderers have completed the signing of Croatian international striker Ivan Klasnic. The 29-year-old frontman has agreed to move to the Reebok Stadium from Nantes on a season-long loan deal.

Gary Megson said: 'Ivan is a player who we have been tracking for quite a while. His goalscoring record is very good and he has an excellent pedigree at international level with Croatia and domestically in Europe.'

16:14pm: Well all the squables over Johnny Heitinga - which is still a daft name - can be resolved on the pitch as the Dutch defender is now an Everton player.

16.13pm: More drama! 'Hey, Thomas Moran here, Brian Begley's boss. Ship the whip Brian or you're outta here!'

What? You expected football news?

16.07pm: West Ham's James Collins has completed his move to Aston Villa, signing a four-year contract with Martin O'Neill's men.

The Welsh international put pen to paper with Villa after passing a medical and agreeing personal terms at the club's Bodymoor Heath training ground today.

Villa are believed to be paying around £5million for Collins, who had recently also attracted interest from Stoke.

Still no news on Dunne though.

16:01pm: Mick Finnan has this tidbit for us: 'Rumours in Hull that they will replace Michael Turner with Phillippe Senderos and then Arsene Wenger will sign Newcastle's Steven Taylor after he had scouts watching him.'

All I'll say is that Phillippe Senderos would struggle to replace a traffic cone.

16:00pm: An hour to go and the transfer window looks certain to slide shut with a whimper. Oh for the days when Fergie was bundling Tottenham strikers into his car.

15:52pm: Brian Begley wonders: 'Is there any update on Richard Dunne putting pen to paper for Villa? Also thought that O'Neill was showing a lot of Interest in David Bentley, he might be the right manager to get the best football from him!'

Well Brian, there's nothing official from either Manchester City or Aston Villa on Dunne's move yet, although a fee of £5million is understood to have been agreed and Dunne is believed to be in Birmingham for a medical and talks with Villa. Seem to be cutting it a bit fine now though.

Bentley does seem to be a typical O'Neill signing - an average English player - but I can't see him leaving Spurs at this late hour.

15:45pm: Ok, I've recovered sufficiently from that little episode to let you know that Rangers have completed the signing of Jerome Rothen from Paris St Germain on a one-year loan deal.

The 31-year-old left winger has become the Clydesdale Bank Premier League champions' first signing for more than a year.

15:39pm: When all else fails and good old fashioned internet fight always livens things up. Kieran Reddan's comments about Johnny Heitinga have got some backs up with Dave Dolan being moved to respond with 'Mr Reddan what are you on about Hetinga? I know he is not in the class of Lucas at Liverpool actually nobody is in that class.'

You know I had such high hopes this morning with the prospect of being able to break news that could change the course of the season. Instead I'm stuck with Roy Keane signing Sunderland cast-offs and arguments over Johnny Heitinga - which, incidentally, is a ridiculous name.

15:17pm: Nothing of note in the last ten minutes outside of a tenious report from Talksport that David Bentley 'may' be on his way to Liverpool. It's not a report I'd put much faith in.

Meanwhile, Liverpool fan Kieran Reddan is not impressed by Everton target Johnny Heitinga. 'Why are Everton buying Johnny Heitinga? I could be mistaken but did he not get a rating of ZERO for his performance for Athletico Madrid at the weekend? He wasn't spectacular against Panathonaikos either. But, hey, as a Pool fan my advice to Moysey is buy buy buy.'

15:04pm: Anthony Doyle has taken a few moments out of his busy day to let us know that: 'Crumlin's Shielton Athletic are trying to tempt 'big' Mick Banks out of retirement to shore up their midfield and to add some bandana-based flair to the Leinster Senior League,' which is slightly more interesting than this David James will he/won't he saga.

He won't incidentally.

14.59pm: Never thought Roy Keane signing former Sunderland players at Ipswich would be a top story today, but sometimes you have to work with the material you're given.

Ipswich have formally signed Grant Leadbitter and Carlos Edwards from Sunderland in a deal that could eventually rise to £3.95million.

According to self confessed Sunderland fan Shane Wallace it's a deal 'Which can only be described as a move backwards in the careers of the two'. Shane then goes on to insist that he was; 'Here before Keane, here after Keane, here despite Keane.'

I think he's talking about the former Sunderland manager rather than the staggeringly awful band of the same name, though it's not clear.

14.45pm: We've had guesses from 107 Henrik Larsson dolls to Lego blocks, but the answer apparentally is fridge magnets. Wonderful.

Is this really what it's come to? At this stage I'd settle for another 'promising' young French signing at Arsenal or a Spanish journeyman at Anfield.

14.22pm: The Sky Sports breaking news alert ticker cranks back into life to inform us that Niko Kranjcar has passed a medical at Tottenham.

14.13pm: A clearly bored Eric Brennan asks; 'Seeing as there is no transfer action whatsoever - can anyone guess what I have 107 of in the one room?'

My initial instinct is to suggest frogs.

14.08pm: Some stunning news coming out of Eastlands - Manchester City are NOT signing a player. The cash-rich City, who have bought roughly half the world's attacking players over the last six months have confirmed that they will not be signing Tottenham's David Bentley. Whatever next, a defender?

14:06pm: Atletico Madrid's Johnny Heitinga is at Goodison Park ahead of what is expected to be a £5million move to Everton.

The Dutch defensive midfielder is currently undergoing a medical and is expected to sign for the Toffees ahead of the 5pm deadline.

1.35pm: Real actual transfer news! Aston Villa have confirmed they have agreed a fee with West Ham for defender James Collins, which is believed to be £5million.

The Wales international is now discussing personal terms with the Birmingham club and must also complete a medical.

1.30pm: Nothing of note to report in the last 30 minutes unless you find the fact that Swansea have rejected a new offer from Wigan for Dutch midfielder Ferrie Bodde interesting. Which you won't.

1.00pm: Just four hours to go and still very little of interest happening. Arsenal, Chelsea Liverpool and Manchester United look increasingly unlikely to make any last-gasp moves and Manchester City simply seem to have run out of people to buy.

12:41pm: Looks like I spoke to soon again as Portsmouth have announced the signing of defender Tal Ben-Haim from Manchester City on a four-year deal and have also confirmed the capture of Hassan Yebda on a season-long loan from Benfica.

First Nicky Shorey, now Ben-Haim and Yebda? At this rate Portsmouth may have 11 players to field come the weekend. Still don't think David James will be one of them though.

12:40pm: Back in the real world, still no more transfers.

12:35pm: There may be hope for those Celtic fans yet! Steven Harris has emailed to inform us of what he claims is some inside information that may free up Glen Crowe to move to Glasgow.

'I was just up at Dalymount to see the lads off on their way to Sligo for tonight's match and I seen Eidur Gudjohnsson getting on the team bus with a grin on his face. He made the right choice, Dalymounts over Monaco is a great deal. Now the door is open for Glen to move on.'

Hard to disagree with you there Stephen, the lush and oppulant surrounds of Monaco are no match for a grey Phibsboro evening hanging around at Leo Burdocks.

12:17pm: And as if things weren't already bad enough for Celtic fans, who must now accept that they'll never see Glen Crowe play for them, rivals Rangers are on the verge of improving their squad with the signing of Paris St Germain winger Jerome Rothen.

12:05pm: Meanwhile there's little happening in the way of transfers anywhere. Even Sky Sports News have ditched the yellow scrolling strap.

12:00pm: Terrible, terrible news for Celtic supporters and football fans everywhere as Alan Kelly dispells any hope they have of seeing Glen Crowe in green and white hoops - no matter how wrong it would look.

'Just to completely quell any possible rumour that Bohs might be involved in any news more significant than their eventual demise, Bohs have a transfer embargo which forbids them adding anymore players to their wagebill, regardless of whether they were getting rid of Crowe at the same time. Not that the story was believable in the first place.'

Not believable? Tell that to the hordes of kids who in eager anticipation of the move are queing up outside Champion Sports to have 'Crowe 11' printed on their back of their shirts.

11.47am: Not to be outdone by their Dublin rivals, Bohemians are muscling in on this British transfer deadline day malarky if you're to believe Eric Brennan who claims: 'Tony Mowbray has not travelled with the Celtic squad to Canada for the friendly game with Benfica tomorrow night.

'Mowbray has instead opted to stay in Glasgow to work on last minute deals to capture a Croatian of Italian parentage, and is looking towards Bohemians Glen Crowe as back up to Scott McDonald. Graham Carey will be used as a make weight in the deal for the one time Irish international.'

Hmmmmmm.

11.36am: Portsmouth claim that they have not received any official bids for David James, which will mean Nicky Shorey might at least have someone to talk to when he turns up at Pompey, aside from that fat tattooed bloke with the bell.

11.32am: It's all gone a bit quiet. There's official confirmation of Eidur Gudjohnsen's move from Barcelona to Monaco on a two-year deal. Have to admit I'm surprised no Premier League club made a move for him, he has experience in the League and would have been a solid addition to the likes of Liverpool or Manchester United.

11.11am: Sky Sports News reckon the Aston Villa's Nicky Shorey is joining Portsmouth on a season long loan. Nice to know there'll be at least one player left at Pompey.

10.59am: Peter Synott emails in to share one of the more outlandish 'rumours' of the day; 'There are whispers from Tallaght that Hull are in talks with Gary Twigg from Shamrock Rovers apparently a bid of just under 100k has been tabled.'

Not too sure about that one Peter. Surely a measly £100,000 wouldn't buy Twiggy's left leg, and would the Scottish sensation be willing to give up European football with the Hoops next season for a dull relegation battle with Hull? No chance.

10.45am: And as if by magic Villa look to be on the verge of signing another decent if unispiring player, very much in the Martin O'Neill managerial template, with reports that West Ham defender James Collins is at the Villa training ground to undergo a medical.

10.39am: Tony Hannon e-mails; 'There were reports last week that Anderson can leave Man U following his displeasure at being dropped. If that's the case, surely someone in the Premiership could be in for him? Come on Villa! Can't we be more exotic than Richard Dunne?'

Can't see Anderson going anywhere given that United are already short on attacking options with Ronaldo and Tevez gone. As for Villa, I don't think you'll ever get more exoctic that Richard Dunne with Martin O'Neill in charge. He's never been a manager to stock up on flair players and in fairness, it's a formula that works for him.

10.24am: Wahey! Some action - Stoke have announced the signing of Danny Collins from Sunderland for £2.75million, which could rise to £3.5million.

Stoke boss Tony Pulis said: 'Danny has been Sunderland's player of the year for the past two seasons which speaks volumes for the impact he has had at that level.'

10.02am: Richard Dunne's proposed move from Manchester City to Aston Villa looks set to be completed well ahead of the 5pm deadline as the Republic of Ireland international is currently undergoing a medical with Villa.

9.54am: Maybe I've spoke too soon as the Sky Sports News yellow ticker kicks into life - 'Darren O'Dea signs three-year contract extension at Celtic. Defender O'Dea travelling to Reading ahead of proposed three-month loan deal'. Oh. Well, I suppose that's nice enough for him, not exactly earth-shattering though.

9.50am: Not much happening at the moment. It's hard to shift the feeling that this year's deadline day will close with a whimper - don't expect anything to match last year's Berbitov drama.

9.30am: More rumours flying around - Spurs' David Bentley is in talks over a move to Manchester City, while Athletico Madrid defender Jonny Heitinga is on the verge of a move to Everton.

9.15am: Portsmouth - busiest side today already - have signed Israeli defender Tal Ben Haim on a four-year contract from Manchester City. And Pompey aren't finished yet - reports indicate Aston Villa's Nicky Shorey is on his way to Fratton Park on loan.

8.30am: Benfica midfielder Hassan Yebda will spend the rest of this season on loan at Portsmouth.

The 25-year-old former France youth international joined Benfica from Le Mans last summer and established himself as a regular squad member last term.

7.30am: Tottenham's interest in Portsmouth pair Niko Kranjcar and David James was at the centre of a hectic day of negotiations ahead of the transfer window closing this evening.

Spurs boss Harry Redknapp is closing in on Kranjcar as cover for injured midfielder Luka Modric and he needs another goalkeeper, although signing a 39-year-old in James would represent a major shift in transfer policy as the club normally target players with re-sale potential.

Redknapp was in the market for a defensive midfielder earlier in the summer when he looked at Patrick Vieira, although he is also a fan of his Inter Milan team-mate Sulley Muntari after working with him at Pompey.

Portsmouth are looking to strengthen before the deadline and could move Tal Ben Haim from Manchester City, Slovakia defender Jan Durica from Lokomotiv Moscow or Algeria midfielder Hadj Aissa from Saudi Arabia side Al Ittifaq.

Sulaiman Al Fahim, who has agreed to buy the club, has previously suggested he would move for Amr Zaki from Zamalek, although the Egyptian side want the former Wigan striker to stay with them until at least January.

In deals completed yesterday, Stoke signed Uruguay midfielder Diego Arismendi from Club Nacional in a deal which could rise to £4.84million.

Sunderland announced they completed the big-money signing of defender Michael Turner from Hull, on a four-year contract for an undisclosed fee.

Wolves confirmed the signing of Austria striker Stefan Maierhofer from Rapid Vienna and Ecuador midfielder Segundo Castillo on a season-long loan from Red Star Belgrade.

West Ham signed defender Manuel da Costa from Fiorentina, and allowed forward Savio Nsereko to move in the opposite direction.

The Hammers are aware of interest from the Italian club for Matthew Upson but would only sell for a suitable offer or to a Champions League team.

They are waiting for bids from Aston Villa or Everton for James Collins, with a transfer helping them sign another striker.

Bordeaux forward Marouane Chamakh is still a possibility.

At Manchester City, Richard Dunne is expected to join Aston Villa but Benjani Mwaruwari has seen a move to Hull collapse.

Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola has also ruled out the possibility of Robinho joining the Spanish giants.

Sunderland defender Danny Collins has held talks with Stoke but is also being chased by Wolves boss Mick McCarthy.

Meanwhile, the Black Cats are still awaiting developments on Ipswich boss Roy Keane's swoop for midfield duo Grant Leadbitter and Carlos Edwards. The clubs have agreed fees, but the transfer is being held up by personal terms.

Hull striker Daniel Cousin could be on his way to Barclays Premier League rivals Burnley after claims an approach for a loan deal has been made.

Andrea Dossena is likely to stay put at Liverpool, according to his agent Roberto La Florio.

The Italian full-back has been linked with a move back to Serie A this summer, with Napoli and Juventus reportedly showing an interest.
