Reid hobbles off on Rovers return

Stephen Reid's long-awaited comeback from a knee injury ended in familiar disappointment for the Republic of Ireland international after his return to action saw him limp out of Blackburn Rovers' 3-1 win over Gillingham with a hamstring strain.

Reid made his first competitive appearance for over a year, starting at right back for Blackburn in their Carling Cup tie last night.

But the 28-year-old limped off before half time with a suspected hamstring problem, which is a familiar problem to those coming back from cruciate ligament injuries.

It is not known yet how serious the injury is or how long it will be before Reid can return to action, but this latest setback casts some doubt over his return to Giovanni Trapattoni's Irish squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifier in Cyprus.
