Galway United 0-2 Bohemians

Jason Byrne grabbed a double as Bohemians cruised to an easy win in testing conditions at Terryland Park.

Having suffered a surprise home loss to Bohemians on Friday night the Gypsies were eager to deliver a dynamic display, and that is exactly what they did in the windy west.

But with Galway emerging as a competent outfit capable of testing illustrious opponents a sense of anticipation surrounded this fixture.

Emboldened by their smashing start to the campaign Galway were intent at the outset as Michael McGrath thumped a sixth minute shot on target, but Brian Murphy saved expertly.

As the half progressed Bohs began to dictate the contest with Paul Keegan's midfield promptings critical.

Still the lead goal owed much to Galway's inability to deal with a routine situation in the 31st minute.

Brian Shelley's clearance eventually fell to Jason Byrne after errors from Garry Breen and Shane Guthrie, and the frontrunner punished the locals ruthlessly.

And Byrne was celebrating again on the stroke of half-time when nodding the Gypsies two ahead following a neat Keegan corner.

Little of note occurred after the interval as Bohs remained on top and they might have added a third, but Ryan made a splendid save to deny Killian Brennan.

Galway United: Ryan; Conneely (Cooke, 59), Breen, Guthrie, Davoren; O'Shea, McBrien (Edwards, 63), Kelly, McGrath, O'Brien; Faherty (Murphy, 83).

Bohemians: B Murphy; Shelley, Heary, McGuinness, Rossiter; Brennan, Cronin, Keegan, Carey (S Byrne, 85); J Byrne, Crowe (Ndo, 75).

Referee: M Gough (Limerick).
