Cork City 2-1 Bray Wanderers

Cork City recorded their first league win of the season against a ten-man Bray Wanderers side who were suffering their first league defeat of the campaign.

Bray had midfielder Daryl Robson sent off after 20 minutes for a second yellow card from referee Mark Gough, just before Cork took the lead with a close range header from Guntars Silagailis.

The in-form Latvian striker put Cork 2-0 in front on the hour, before Bray made a fight of it with a goal from former Cork player Dave Mulcahy.

But Paul Doolin's side now move above Wanderers after picking up the points.

Both these clubs went into the match without a league victory so far, with the home side having picked up just one point from a draw in Sligo to go with defeats against St Patrick's Athletic and Derry City.

Bray were, however, unbeaten following their three opening draws, at home to Shamrock Rovers and Galway United and away to Drogheda United.

It was the home side who started brightly with former Republic of Ireland midfielder Colin Healy belting a 25-yard strike inches wide of the Bray goal after just two minutes.

But Eddie Gormley's young side responded when a free-kick from Dane Massey was headed against the Cork post beyond the diving Dan Connor in the seventh minute.

Then the game had two major turning points in the space of six minutes. First, Bray were reduced to ten men when midfielder Daryl Robson, who was shown a yellow card for kicking the ball away after 10 minutes, was shown a second yellow card by referee Mark Gough following a foul on Cork defender Neal Horgan in the 20th minute.

Shortly afterwards, Cork jumped in front when Denis Behan headed a far post cross back into the six yard box and there was in-form Latvian striker Guntars Silagailis to head home from a couple of yards out.

Behan went close to extending the Cork advantage in the 58th minute, chasing a long ball, he lifted his effort over goalkeeper Chris O'Connor and just a foot wide of the Bray goal.

Seconds later, Cork did score a second goal as Joe Gamble passed to Silagailis in the penalty area, and he lifted the ball over the advancing O'Connor and, despite the chasing defenders, the ball rolled into the net.

Gormley's side never gave up despite being reduced to ten men and they gave Cork a difficult closing half hour when they pulled a goal back through former Cork City player Dave Mulcahy after 63 minutes.

The centre-back finished a cross from substitute Chris Shields when he guided the ball home in a crowded goalmouth to give his side hope.
