Steven Reid ruled out for the season

Blackburn Rovers and Republic of Ireland midfielder Steven Reid has been ruled out of action for the rest of the season with a knee problem.

Injury-plagued Reid requires surgery on a recurring knee problem and is expected to be out for six or seven months.

Reid's latest injury has seen him miss Blackburn's last four games as well as Ireland's World Cup qualifier with Cyprus.

He previously missed the 2006-07 season with a stress fracture of the back and then a cruciate knee ligament injury.

Reid has spent five years at Ewood Park since his £2.5 million move from Millwall.

Rovers manager Paul Ince said: 'It's a massive blow, because Reidy is an integral part of my side; he's got great experience and he's great around the camp.

'I'm gutted for him, because he's a great lad and great pro who gives his all for the club. He's disappointed, and we are all disappointed.

'It's sad and it seems to be one thing after another for him.'
