Wexford Youths 0-2 Longford Town
Tuesday, 9 September 2008 22:36Longford Town gained three valuable points against League Cup finalists Wexford Youths in this bottom of the table Eircom League Division 1 game at Ferrycarrig Park on Tuesday night.
A first half dominated by Wexford Youths saw the homeside fail to utilise the chances that came their way. They should have taken the lead after just four minutes when a Conor Sinnott free-kick put in Richie Fitzgerald, but his low shot was blocked by the outstretched legs of keeper Neil Gallagher.
With Longford Town making little impression as Conor Sinnott and Patsy Malone dominated midfield for the homeside, Wexford Youths had another chance when Patsy Malone put in Paul Murphy but he shot into the side netting.
After 23 minutes Wexford Youths spurned another great chance when Richie Fitzgerald cut the ball back from the end line but Danny Furlong missed a real sitter pulling the ball over the top from just six metres.
Totally against the run of play the visitors took the lead the stroke of half-time, when Darren McKenna raced onto a long ball out of defence, and seeing home keeper Pa Doyle advance off his line he cooly lobbed the ball to the net from 30 metres leaving the visitors with a 1-0 interval lead.
Longford Town, who showed considerable improvement, struck for their second goal on 56 minutes when McKenna headed home a Gary Murphy cross securing the points in the process.
