Inter win Serie A but violence mars victory
Sunday, 18 May 2008 21:41A police officer is in serious condition in hospital following clashes with Internazionale fans before their team clinched the Scudetto on Sunday, according to Italian news sources.
The officer is being treated for a damaged spleen as he tried to control fights between rival sets of fans prior to the game at Parma, which the Nerazzurri won 2-0.
Another officer was also injured after he was hit by a rock which broke a van's window.
Inter fans had been banned from attending the match for safety reasons but descended on Parma en masse and over 1,000 fans still managed to gain entry to the match.
The majority of the clashes broke out when fans without tickets tried to get into the Stadio Ennio Tardini by climbing over fences.
Nerazzurri supporters also heavily damaged a school outside the stadium after the match, breaking windows and tearing up trees.
The game itself saw Sweden forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic come back after a month and a half out with injury to make the difference for the champions, scoring twice in the second half when it looked as if AS Roma might pip the nerazzurri to the post.
In the end, Roma's challenge faded as they were held to a 1-1 draw at Catania, which meant they could not have overhauled Inter even if the defending champions had lost.
But despite leading his team to silverware again this season, rumours are rife that manager Roberto Mancini will be on his way, something the Inter hierarchy were keen to dismiss.
'Mancini is staying, everyone can be calm. It was a tough championship race but one we deserved to win,' said Massimo Moratti, the Inter president.
General manager Gabriele Oriali agreed that Mancini would be going nowhere, even though press reports have suggested he will leave for Chelsea with Jose Mourinho taking over.
'I don't think there'll be a problem, I'm 101 per cent sure Mancini will stay with the same commitment to keep winning and doing well for Inter, I can guarantee it,' said Oriali.
Serbian midfielder Dejan Stankovic admitted the title run-in had been tough but said his team deserved their success.
'That was tough, particularly the last month and a half,' he said. 'Everyone can say what they want but we're the best.
Roma boss Luciano Spalletti preferred to focus on the achievements of his team in pushing a much bigger and richer club right to the wire and a dramatic final day of the season.
As the scores stood at half-time - Roma were leading 1-0 while it was goalless in Parma - his team would have won the league.
But it wasn't to be.
'I want to congratulate my team who overcame so many difficulties. We are very bitter and very disappointed to not have won,' said Spalletti.
Pablo Osvaldo put Fiorentina into the Champions League qualifiers and left AC Milan in the UEFA Cup thanks to a stunning overhead kick 13 minutes from time as they beat Torino 0-1.
Milan had to come from a goal down at the San Siro against Udinese. Giandomenico Mesto put the visitors ahead on half an hour after cutting inside and steering the ball home.
Milan hit back quickly in the second period with Alexandre Pato tapping in and Filippo Inzaghi slamming home after Pato's layoff. Kaka fluffed a penalty before Cafu made it three in his final match for Milan and Clarence Seedorf found a fourth.
Juventus, who drew 3-3 away to Sampdoria on Saturday join Inter, Roma and Fiorentina in next seasons Champions League.
Despite winning on the final day, Empoli will join Parma and Livorno in Serie B after relegation rivals Catania's draw with Roma kept them safe.
