Republic appointment may be close

FAI Chief Executive John Delaney has dropped the broadest hint yet that a new Republic of Ireland international managerial appointment could be imminent.

Speaking in Limerick last night, he repeatedly described a meeting of the association's board, scheduled for tonight, as being of significance.

Don Givens, chairman of the three-man selection committee tasked with helping to find a new manager, will be present.

A statement is due to be released by the FAI shortly after the meeting.

Terry Venables remains the favourite to land the job after several other high-profile candidates, such as Gerard Houllier and David O'Leary, have ruled themselves out.
