Republic to face Serbia in friendly

The Republic of Ireland will host Serbia in an international friendly at Croke Park on 24 May, 2008.

The Serbs are currently ranked 30th in the FIFA world rankings.

An FAI spokesman said: 'When the draw for the 2010 World Cup was made last month in South Africa, it was apparent that we drew the toughest sixth seed opponents in Montenegro.

'We feel that the Serbia friendly will provide a vital opportunity for us to test ourselves against a technically strong team and in terms of playing style, they are very similar to Montenegro.'

In 2006 Serbia & Montenegro featured at the finals of the World Cup in Germany, but failed to progress past the group stage.

In Serbia's first campaign since independence, the White Eagles missed out on EURO 2008 qualification by three points in Group A where Portugal and Poland secured the highly-coveted places.
