Moyes wants clubs to drug test players
Tuesday, 21 October 2003Everton manager David Moyes has called on the FA and the Professional Footballers' Association to allow clubs to drug test their own players, in the wake of the Rio Ferdinand fiasco.
Under current rules agreed between the FA and the PFA, testing can only be carried out by an independent assessors attached to the UK Sport organisation, however Moyes believes that players should also have to undergo random tests run by their clubs.
The Everton boss believes that such a measure would weed out any possible doping cheats within the game and said: " I find it incredible that it isn't now part of every player's contract that they must - at any time - receive a drug test or a breathalyser test from their club."
He added: "You can't jump to conclusions, and I am certainly not suggesting anyone is guilty of anything. But on the issue of testing, it would help the clubs and help the players - everyone knows the damage that alcohol and drugs can do to your body."
