Keane still top with United fans

Roy Keane has been under fire following his controversial dismissal from the Republic of Ireland's World Cup squad, but Manchester United fans are still backing their captain. Keane has finished top of a fans' poll on MUTV and will be unveiled tonight (6pm) as the MUTV player of the 2001-02 season.

Keane took more than a quarter of all votes to claim top spot, but the biggest surprise came with the runners' up spot which goes to Juan Sebastian Veron, who finished only a few votes behind Keane. David Beckham finished in third place with Ruud Van Nistelrooy fourth and last year's winner Ryan Giggs fifth.

The award, which is based on fans voting at the end of each game for their man of the match, will be presented to Keane at the start of next season.
